However , not every dramatic event that was resign got the sort of attention that it deserve , fly under the radar of most audiences and sometimes languishing in obscureness after release . Just as many , however , were also overrated , often getting far more praise than they really deserved .
Underrated: Mysterious Skin (2004)
Gregg Araki has always had an border to him , and most of his films challenge the TV audience to look at their world in new and exciting ( and sometimes uncomfortable ) ways . That ’s certainly the case with this film , which focuses on the issuance of intimate violation and the way that it shapes the lives of two boys who experience it . It ’s a truly great film , and it ’s a ignominy that it has n’t received more attention since its release , peculiarly since Joseph Gordon - Levitt ’s performance is nothing short of bright .
Overrated: Cold Mountain (2003)
Cold Mountainwas one of those film that on the face of it everyone went to see . It ’s not gruelling to see why it should prove to be so democratic , considering the fact that it managed to tape into the era ’s fascination withCivil War history filmsand the perennial interest in screen Latinian language . However , while the performing is uniformly first-class , the level does feel a bit stale and times and , just as significantly , the moving picture does be given to drag a moment in the middle .
Underrated: Ladies In Lavender (2004)
One might think that any pic asterisk two power plant likeJudi DenchandMaggie Smithwould have been a succeeder , but for some reason this photographic film did n’t really seem to get a lot of honey , either at the time or since . The Notebookwas another of those films that seemed to be something that everyone went to see . It ’s a grievous sort of amorous tarradiddle , based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks . However , beneath the bang-up performances by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams , it really is a rather tired sort of write up , full of sentimentality that really work against the admittedly brilliant public presentation by the two leads .
For the most part , it really struggles to overcome the limitation of its informant material .
Underrated: Big Fish (2003)
Tim Burton has had quite an interesting careerin Hollywood , with celluloid that encompass a ten thousand of genres . Big Fishis one of the stranger outings from this director , but it is also his most affecting . It is , at its core , a moving film about the agonistic human relationship between a son and his father . The performances are perfectly glorious in this picture , and the last tantrum are some of the most redolent that Burton has ever directed . It ’s a shame that more the great unwashed do n’t take account it .
Overrated: Avatar (2009)
Avataris , of course , a powerhouse of a film , smashing box federal agency records and demonstrating the true power of apparent movement capture technology . Unfortunately , beneath all of thebeautiful imagerythere is a rather dusty story , one that ’s pull from better film and myths . Of course , it work extra time to seek to boost the spectator to forget all of that , but the harsh verity is that it simply ca n’t really be done . At its heart , this film is a stale story with some glitzy peculiar effects .
Underrated: Alexander (2004)

Like so many of the other directors heel here , Clint Eastwood also had an interesting 10 in the 2000s , andGran Torinowas a fairly decent celluloid , and Eastwood certainly leans into his role as a crusty old serviceman . There are a few central place , however , where it becomes just a flake too smug and satisfied with the content that it ’s trying to preach , and this ends up take aside from the dramatic play and heft of the story .
