She ’s constantly concocting stories , but when she jumps to the wrong conclusion about what Robbie Turner was doing with her sis , Cecelia , the resolution is a lifetime of atonement for all characters involved - all , except for the one who is guilty . The film ’s expert use of filming , sound , and dialogue make it a memorable and knock-down watch .
“How Old Do You Have To Be To Know The Difference Between Right And Wrong?”
When Briony is questioned about what she " saw " when she stumbled upon Lola , Briony insists that she saw Robbie with her own eyes . She only take on it was him because she scan an inappropriate letter of the alphabet he accidentally passed on to Cecelia .
Later in the film , Briony expose that she was in beloved with Robbie as a kid , but of course of study , he never saw her that way . Only at the old age of 18 is Briony capable to accept her guilt in wrongfully accusing Robbie of attack Lola . He ’s not impressed with her apologia , reminding her that people the same age as her are dying in the war .
“Oh, You Idiot!”
One of the most memorable scene of the pic is the one that changes everything . Cecelia and Robbie are out by the fountain , fighting over the vase when it violate . A piece of it sinks down to the bottom of the H2O .
Cecelia turn on Robbie . " Oh , you idiot ! " Robbie barely suppresses his laughter Cecelia exclaims , " Do you realize that ’s probably the most valuable thing we own ? " He only smile and calmly respond , " Not any longer , it is n’t . " raging , she lour herself into the water to retrieve the handgrip .
“Come Back. Come Back To Me.”
As Robbie is taken aside by the police , Cecelia outburst forth and whispers in his auricle : " Come back . Come back to me . " These words stay with Robbie over the years spent in France .
When they meet years after the incident in the depository library , Robbie is barely able to meet Cecelia ’s middle . He ca n’t even behave for her to equal him . She brings him back to realness by repeating the tidings , " Come back . Come back to me . "
“I Gave Them Their Happiness.”
The last scene of the movie is an consultation Briony gives as an writer about her new al-Qur’an , Atonement . She profess that the ending is fabricated , because in realism , Robbie and Cecelia never got their glad ending , and Briony did n’t get to make damages with them .
Both of them died in the state of war , but in Briony ’s account , she made sure that they got to survive in their clapboard star sign by the sea . She desire that giving them an alternate conclusion will be perceived as a final act of kindness .
“The Truth Is I Feel Rather Foolish And Lightheaded In Your Presence, Cee, And I Don’t Think I Can Blame The Heat.”
Robbie spends a portion of time in his room trying to write an appropriate varsity letter to Cecelia . He tries to apologize for his behavior by the fountain and for the vase .
In one rendering , he confesses his intuitive feeling towards her , which he ’s intelligibly been mindful of for a while . He ’s also sure that Cecelia know but has n’t quite made her peace with it yet , which is why she usually avoids him .
“It Was More Formal, Less … Anatomical?”
In regards to these letter , the one Cecelia receives is not the one Robbie had intended for her eyes - or anyone else ’s . The missive also stop up in Briony ’s workforce , and he only realize when it ’s too former .
Fortunately , Cecelia find the situation as funny as he does . She even teases him about it in the library , though the scene is overabundant with tension . He apologise and explains that the adaptation she was meant to read was " more courtly , less … " He trails off , and Cecelia supply , " Anatomical ? "
“Yes, I Saw Him.”
Even though Briony is only a child , she ’s the only witness on whom the law can depend for a authentic answer as to who assaulted Lola .
Briony first say that she saw him , but when prompted , she amend her result . " I sleep with it was him . " The ship’s officer squints at her . " You know it was him , or you saw him ? " She then overcompensates and hard repeats that she view him , seal the deal .
“If All We Have Rests On A Moment In A Library Three And A Half Years Ago, Then I’m Not Sure …”
When Robbie and Cecelia meet twelvemonth later , neither of them is the same . Robbie has been shock by the war but also doubts whether what happened between them was real .
Cecelia is dire to keel him back to the present , even as his center fill with tears . " If all we have respite on a moment in a library three and a half years ago , then I ’m not sure … " But Cecelia sympathize and ease him , assure him that what they have is real .
“Don’t You Know?”
One of the things the film does really well is equilibrize silence with punchy dialogue . The noted library tantrum , for instance , make excellent exercise of both . The fibre circumvent around the real subject at hand .
Cecelia alludes to something having been there " for weeks " and how Robbie was aware of it before she was , evidently meaning their reciprocal attraction . Robbie asks her why she ’s weep . She glower at him . " Do n’t you recognize ? " He steps forward and in a single breath enjoin , " Yes , I bonk exactly , " before snog her .
“The Story Can Resume.”
The assumed hope that the narration play with is perhaps the most grievous part of it . Robbie and Cecelia consider that they still have a chance if their sexual love has survived so much . He writes to Cecelia from France , saying that he will " simply resume . "
" My history will resume . The one I had been project on that eve walk . I can become again the man who once cross the Surrey Park at dusk in my best suit of clothes , tittup on the promise of lifetime … I will return , encounter you , love you , wed you , and subsist without pity . "
