Bruce Wayne has always held his parents , Thomas and Martha Wayne , in high wish . Not only were their death ’s the elemental aspiration for him grooming and becoming Batman but their memory continue to breathe in and give Bruce strength in his everyday spirit . InDetective Comics # 1027 , writer James Tynion IV and artist Riley Rossmo ’s " Ghost Story " discover that the reasonBatmanisn’t afraid of ghosts is due to a conversation he had with his mother many years ago .
While Batman and his sidekickRobinteam up with Boston Brand akaDeadmanto take on the supernatural criminal telephone the Specter Collector , we see flashbacks to Bruce ’s childhood where a scared Bruce is comforted by his female parent after watching too many scarey moving-picture show with his founding father . James and Riley pepper this conversation with flash bulb of Bruce ’s childhood way , full of images that would later revolutionize his revere alter - self-importance , before Bruce asks his female parent a serious question : does Martha believes in shade ?
As Bruce and his phantasmal associate Deadman go underground to look the ghost - crunch ( yes , really ) villain , Martha reveals that she believes spectre are echoes of memories , events that hoi polloi manifest within themselves . Bad memories metamorphose into something scary that overpowers any of the remaining good to haunt others but good computer storage also exist . The storytellers accompany each idea with a serial publication of icon tramp from creepy to whimsical as Martha explains that good memory are either case someone cherishes or people ( or entity ) that sleep together them as well which never result you . But then Bruce asks a interrogation that any minor would ask any parent discuss life and death , does that think thatMartha would become a ghostwhen she pass away ?
As Bruce and Boston are victorious and relinquish the spirits the Specter Collector held captive , Batman let out that the cause he does n’t fear ghost is because of this accurate conversation he had with his mother . Although she ’s been dead for what feel like a lifespan , Martha ’s memory and lessons survive on with her only son . As the freed spirit scare the waiting Robin , Deadman offers to reward Batman for his help , offer to see if Bruce ’s parents are out there and watching over him . The Dark Knight refuse his offer , remembering that his mother already told him that she and his father would always be watching over him , their love stronger than even last .
Although other stories have depicted his parent ’s memory as metaphoric tormentor due to the obligations of his iconic promise , this short story saw the vigilant Batman , content , and at peace with his parent ’s end . Shrugging off this surprising drippy moment , Batman and Robin prepare to get back on patrol , with a smiling Deadman watching as they fell away . Although Batman has often shown himself to be emotionally distant , grim , or at times unendurable , Tynion and Rossmo show that despite thetrauma of his parent ’s death and the effect it had on Bruce Wayne ’s life , Batmanwas capable to find peace , even if only for a moment .
