No . I do n’t think anybody think we ’d do another one . I do n’t think Bogus Journey did well enough . Excellent Adventure did barely well enough to warrant a sequel , and then Bogus Journey did n’t do well enough for us to do another motion picture . We think it was over . We were certain it was over after that , and Chris and I figured , hey , Bill & Ted is a manifestation of where we were as young adult writers , and that ’s okay . That ’s where they ’ll live . We both kind of moved on . It was n’t until airless to … I require to say the other 2000s , possibly 2003 or 2004 … Keanu and Alex both maintain getting asked if there was go to be another Bill & Ted picture . We started asking ourselves , " Is it possible ? " But fundamentally , Keanu would always brush it off . There was never the thought of doing " The Adventures of Bill & Jim , " or " The Adventures of Bob & Ted , " was there ?
Oh God , no ! No , no , no . It was only ever give-up the ghost to be the original Bill & Ted or nothing . And we wrote the specification book , and when we finally get down the guys behind it , and we did a twosome of rescript for them , and we brought it in very proudly to MGM , who own the rights . I did n’t read the script , so I ca n’t annotate on whether or not it was any expert or not , but … We stopped them by circumstances . I do n’t know . Somehow , they chose not to make the other one . When we were blab about whether or not there might be another movie after Bogus Journey , I intend , truthfully , one of the reasons we did n’t think so was because Bogus Journey did " ok , " but not big , as we were saying . But that those numbers do n’t reflect is that over the next 20 old age , people like yourself would set about to discover the films , and the audience would grow in a way of life that you ca n’t account for . The number just did n’t brook the idea of another moving-picture show . And we could n’t get anyone to finance it . We did have several studios who articulate , " If the rights to Bill & Ted are available , we ’d be glad to do a reboot with young Bill & Ted played by articulatio coxae YouTube stars . "

And we were like , " God , that is just not what we want to do . That is the opposite of what we ’re try on to do here ! " That took years . eld of try on and rewrite the script and trying again . It looked like we were going to get rig up at a studio called STX . They optioned it briefly , but then they dump it . Then it looked like we were going to arrange it up at Lionsgate , but that go down apart . It kept almost happen and then not happening . Finally , this guy , Alex Lebovici and his party , Hammerstone Studios … Alex had been a Bill & Ted fan . He ’s young , he ’s a millennian , but he had been a Bill & Ted fan , and he optioned it and fight like crazy to get funding . But it was very punishing to put it together , and it almost fell aside many time , and in fact it did devolve apart two weeks before we started shoot . There was just this jumbo scramble , and I really suppose , " Oh crap , this thing just is n’t become to happen , is it ? " But it did .

There was a lot of strong-arm pressure sensation to move quickly because we did n’t have much money , but Dean produce an environment that was good and protected , and we were capable to really have merriment on set . It was an incredible contrast to the unbelievable pressure we were feel when we were attempt to get the movie plant up and made , which was quite utmost .

Chris and I both knew we needed someone who was going to kill everybody . And we want it to be a comedic character . I do n’t think De Nomolos really solve in Bogus Journey because he was n’t really a risible construct . I do n’t think we get him right . And Death was so fun to write in Bogus Journey because he was perfectly arrogant and minatory , but at his essence , implausibly pure . For me and Chris , that ’s just so fun . It ’s so fun to write those kinds of character who are threatening and terrific , but when you blarney them a little bit , they ’re just blubbering balls of insecurity .
That ’s what it ’s like for most real - living wannabe elusive guys , correct ? Being tough and scary and macho and all that , it ’s all a facade .
For sure . For sure . dead . So in Face the Music , we already neutered Death as a threat , so that would n’t really work . So we were trying to think , " What would be fun to compose ? " Then we had a notion of a killer golem who was design to be kind of human , but he is n’t really completed . We initially had , in the view where we introduce the robot , we actually had a farseeing account , dialogue of " he ’s not quite quick , there was a bit of a malfunction , " " Oh , what do you mean ? " " He ’s just a little morsel … Neurotic . " " What ? " " Nothing , nothing , nevermind ! " But Dean ’s estimation was to not wire it , because then masses will just be waiting for it . He thought we should just let everyone intend he ’s just this fearful robot and a killing political machine , and then surprise citizenry with it . That was Dean ’s melodic theme , and he really save the presentation of that concept . So we trimmed out the hints at the rootage that he was anything other than fearsome .
I think it was the correct choice , I mean , those first moment where you ’re like , " expect , what ’s his deal ? " are so special .
But I have to say , much of what is great about Dennis Caleb McCoy is the performance by Anthony Carrigan . I think the conception is on paper , of claiming he has a name , it ’s on the paper , but Anthony ’s performance was pure brainiac , in my opinion . It elevated it beyond what we ever expect . He also advert - libbed some great poppycock . One of my very favorite lines in the whole movie , and one of the fourth dimension when I spontaneously laughed viewing it … I do n’t laugh a fortune see poppycock I already know is fit to find . It ’s one of those things where you almost destroy the take because it ’s so funny that you set forth laughing . multitude were laugh into their hired man and into their shirts , trying desperately to not ruin the whole take . And Anthony was full of those things . I ca n’t say enough good things about him . He was really fun to work with , and really open to try new poppycock lead and ripe and change it on the moment to adjudicate and keep making it funny . And he also was performing in 104 degree weather condition in whatever that automaton costume was made of ! It was incredibly difficult to put on and take off . I have to say , he ’s a pro , and a great summation to the picture show .
