The Dark Knight Rises

A scene from Christopher Nolan ’s 2012 blockbusterThe Dark Knight Riseswould have do the picture to be slapped with an NC-17 paygrade , had it not been deleted . Nolan ’s third and final entry in the trilogy remains a divisive one for fans even today .

When Nolan first film over the rein on the highly popularBatmanfranchise in 2005 , it was secure to say that he was n’t on the radar of most comic Word of God movie lover . At the time , theBatmanfranchise was still reeling from the indignities of Joel Schumacher ’s 1997 washout , Batman & Robin . It was gruelling to reckon that much could be done to save that particular loop of the Batman , but Nolan succeeded beyond anyone ’s expectation . Things were taken to the next level in 2008 whenThe Dark Knightarrived – a plastic film that many today still consider to be Nolan ’s greatest cinematic achievement . A big part of the film ’s succeeder wasHeath Ledger ’s chilling depiction of the Joker , for which Ledger later earned a posthumous Oscar . The stakes were so high for the franchise ’s third and final instalment , however , that whenThe Dark Knight Riseswas unblock , some fan could n’t quite come to terms with it .

Now , according to a report fromIGN , it come out that Gotham ’s Deputy Police Commissioner Peter Foley , play by Matthew Modine , almost met a very beastly end . As fans of the film will recall , the quality was killed off in a gun battle against Bane ’s forces . But as Modine has give away , the original death scenario for Foley was much dissimilar – and much more gruesome . Originally be after to be killed by Talia al Ghul ’s Tumbler , the death scene was so brutal that if Nolan had kept it in the cinema ’s final cut , it would have get a dreaded NC-17 rating . As Modine explained :

" After Bane die and Batman , Chris [ Bale ] gets jab , [ Talia ] gets in one of those vehicles . She get down to drive away , and I ’m dash at her . And I got draw over . All it does is , it just cut down and I ’m on the ground , dead . But it was so violent . The bozo that was doubling me got hit by the car . They put a plexiglass thing on the front of [ the railroad car ] and he got hit . They had R-2 to deplume him into the melodic phrase , but he went up and they dropped him from about 15 invertebrate foot , and the audio of his body hit the cobblestone street in front of the New York Stock Exchange , it was sickening . And I think back I looked at Christopher Nolan when we inject it and his side was white . He was like , ‘ o.k. , let ’s move on . We get that . ’ But it was like , ‘ Oh my God , is that guy going to get up ? Is he okay ? ’ But [ Nolan ] suppose that if he would have put it in the movie , it would ’ve got an NC-17 rating because it was so violent . "

The NC-17 evaluation is widely acknowledged as the osculation of demise of for films in America , as it allow few options for distribution . Many popularfilms have received   an NC-17 ratingover the long time , but have recut the footage to be given an R - military rank instead . In the typesetter’s case ofThe Dark Knight Rises , the flick was ultimately give a very workable PG-13 paygrade , which makes a huge difference in comparison to NC-17 . As the second highest grossing plastic film in Nolan’sDark Knighttrilogy , an NC-17 rating would likely have severely damage the film ’s boxwood - office profit .

For Batman fans , perhaps the original ending that Nolan had plan for Foley would have been far more striking . It ’s voiceless to traverse that the stunt piece of work alone sounded pretty unbelievable . Perhaps one day this footage will be unblock on some sort ofdirector ’s cut or anniversary editionofThe Dark Knight Rises . Ultimately , however , it ’s hard to disagree that Nolan made the veracious choice in geld the scene – if only to ensure that more fans were able to see the film .
