The climax came about as the resolution of a whodunit more than anything else . Ed realized that the haunting was not a hoax when he played back two recording of Janet simultaneously . They realized that Janet was really being possess and needed to be saved . Lorraine discovered the name of the demon using the girl and banished it . It was the first appearance of Valak but not that last .
